Greek grower with Dutch roots specialises in white asparagus

Schotman Hendrik S.A. is a Greek company with Dutch roots. The company was started back in 1998 by Henk Schotman, who felt that a lot could be done to improve the production, organisation and marketing of Greek asparagus

Nowadays the company is specialized in the marketing of asparagus (yearly ca. 1.200 tons) and kiwi (ca. 4.000 tons) grown in the delta of the river Nestos (prefecture of Kavala in North-eastern Greece).

At Freskon we spoke with the son of founder Henk, Ari Schotman, about the unfolding asparagus season. 95% Of the company's total production is white asparagus, which is exported mainly to Germany. The remaining 5% of green asparagus is allocated for the domestic market.

Due to the soft winter, which caused a decrease in production this season, Ari said that it was still, overall, a good season for asparagus. "Although production was down, asparagus prices were higher than the year before, after Germany and Poland didn't start until mid-April, causing demand and prices to increase. Of course, once their asparagus hit the market, prices fell a lot," stated Aris.

At this moment, 9th May, harvest and exports have been terminated.
