Turkey: Early harvest of apples started in Nigde

The harvest of the Gala variety of apples has started in Nigde, known as the biggest apple production city in Turkey. This particular variety is known for its early arrival to the market and the prices are around 0.3 USD per kg at the moment.

Grower Ahmet Gultekin: “I have been growing apples in a 55 million square feet production area and have a production of 3,000 tons annually. I export Gala apples to Russia, the United Kingdom, Iraq and India. I also have 10 million square feet of pear production fields. For apples, we have Scarlett and Golden varieties in addition to the Gala variety.”

Last year 328,000 tons of apples were harvested in Nigde from 9.8 million apple trees.
