Turkey: Tomato harvest has started in Igdir

The growers in Igdir, a city located in southeastern Turkey, were already busy with the melon and watermelon harvest but now the harvest of tomatoes has started as well.

Tomato prices so far have been satisfactory for growers due to the relatively low amount of production because some growers could not cope with the high production costs and low prices in the market. Fuel prices were a very important cost item for growers and the prices last year were around 0.22 USD per 10 kg which resulted a lot of growers lowering their production but now it is around 5 USD per 10 kg thus the growers are earning good money for their products this season. The tomatoes are sent to neighboring cities and contribute to the local economy by creating another source of income.
