Lindert Moerdijk, MSP Onions:

"Overseas buyers cancelling onion orders due to high prices"

Nowadays, it is not a simple task to sell onions. "The farmers' moods are very positive, but sales are lagging behind. This lack of sales is due to the high prices. It is very difficult to realise good prices for growers. Too many overseas buyers are falling by the wayside with these prices. They are finding alternatives in their surrounding countries. The only assurance Senegal has given us is that it is unsure when their borders will be open for business. Meanwhile, we already have two boatloads of onions waiting", says Lindert Moerdijk of Dutch onion wholesaler, MSP Onions.

"Speculators and farmers are expecting great things. This expectation is, however, not based on current or projected demand. The total yield per hectare over the whole line is lower than usual. This means growers need to get higher prices. Of course, the yield per hectare is lower even if there are large differences between lots. Particularly in the southwest of the country, the sowed onions are far too small. The overseas buyers who usually buy large onions are not interested at all. This is due to the high prices", continues Lindert.

"I am anxious to see what is going to happen next. With this demand and prices, I expect it will be a form of art to be able to meet the expectations of this market. We will have to work hard on the exports if we want to try and achieve this."
