Polish apple growers suffer from overproduction
As Polish orchards have had record breaking yields this year, prices of apples are low. In addition, it's possible that 0.5 million tons of fruit will be wasted.
This year's production of Polish apples could reach up to 4.5 or 5 million tons - that's about 20 percent more than the average over the last three years and almost twice as much as in 2017.
As a result of the lower prices for the fruit, a kilogram of apples for the industry costs only 20-35 cents. Fruit farmers can achieve better prices on dessert apples - PLN 0.93 (EUR 0.22)/ kg, but the demand is limited and it is no longer growing.
According to polandinenglish.info, Polish consumers have eaten only about 0.5 million tons (11.5 kg per person) for several years, but they sent 1 million tons abroad. Inevitably, the rest of the fruit goes into processing, and this year at least 3 million tons will be processed.
