Dominican Republic: Biodegradable banding for bananas

Lidl Ireland is working alongside their Irish supplier, Global Fruit and growers in the Dominican Republic, to remove the plastic packaging on the 2.5 million Fairtrade Organic bananas sourced from the family business there. This will pre-empt the use of 10,000 kilos of plastic every year.

Instead, biodegradable banding is used to package the bananas, completely eliminating plastic and holding the product in bunches with the Fairtrade Organic branding and barcode.

It’s the first solution of its kind to be on sale in Ireland. And on top of all that, Fairtrade premium contributions from these bananas will support a primary school in Mao Valverde, providing high-quality education to more than 50 children (Project Bambini).
