Mexico is one of the world's top 10 producers of pineapples. In the last decade Mexico had an average production of 741,000 tons, which allowed it to satisfy its domestic demand and to position its pineapples in international markets.
The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) stated that the pineapple production has had an upward trend since 2010, with a greater emphasis in the past four years.
The country went from producing 702,000 tons in 2010 to more than 875,000 last year, according to a preliminary report prepared by the Agricultural Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP).
The agency said that in the last three years pineapple production recorded Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 2.4%, with an average volume of 843,000 tons.
Between 2015 and 2016, production increased by 4.2%, as it went from 840,000 tons to 875,742 tons.
The major pineapple producing states in Mexico are Veracruz, which accounts for 64.9% of the national volume; Oaxaca, 12.8 percent, Tabasco, 6.2%, Quintana Roo, 4.6%, and Jalisco, 2.8%
According to SAGARPA, the country's total pineapple production has a market value of at least 2,899 million pesos and Mexico's annual per capita consumption stands at 6.3 kilograms.
The main export destinations for Mexican pineapples include the United States, South Korea, and Spain, which together account for more than 95% of the foreign sales made in that period.
