"Where there is war it will be very difficult to do business"

Panic in Ukraine as prices soar and consumers shy away from buying fruit and vegetables

“Unfortunately, there is a panic in Ukraine now. It's really hard to talk to someone right now!” says a regular exporter to the Ukraine. Prices of fruit and vegetables had increased drastically just before the Russian invasion of Ukraine as exports from Europe dropped and consumer confidence has fallen. The situation is changing rapidly.

“Unfortunately, due to the aggravation of the situation in Ukraine, the consumer's ability to buy has fallen very much. Prices have gone up a lot. We used to send 2 to 3 trucks per week. Now I'm alone, and it's very hard. Ordinary people cannot buy fruits at such prices, especially pensioners. The main products are now brought from the countries of Turkey and Greece, where purchase prices are much lower. But at the same time, prices in Ukraine are going up!,” says Garik Andriasyan, who lived in Ukraine for 30 years. His export company Gold Scorpion S.L. is based in Spain from where they send several trucks of produce to Ukraine a few times a week.

“The main fruits and vegetables are now from Turkey and Greece. In Spain, supplies fell due to higher purchase prices in Spain. Yes, of course, fruit from countries like Turkey and Greece may not be so tasty, but they are more or less cheaper. The volume of imports has decreased significantly. The situation is incomprehensible, so many exporters do not take risks,” says Andriasyan.

“If the situation does not change for the better, then I think imports will be reduced many times over. Now import companies have reduced the amount of imports and they are just waiting!

"We have been working with Ukraine for more than 6 years. I don't remember it being this bad! But of course we will try not to stop cooperating with Ukrainian companies. And let's hope things get better soon. If the situation escalates for the worse, then I'm afraid to imagine what could be. After all, you understand that where there is war, it will be very difficult to do business.

"But I really hope that all this will stop soon, and we will all live in peace. I wish you all peace and goodness,” concluded a worried Andriasyan.
