Ugandans urged to preserve local avocado variety as demand rises

The National Agricultural Advisory Services in Uganda is encouraging farmers and private individuals to conserve local avocado varieties in response to a surge in demand. This increase is linked to the establishment of avocado oil processing facilities within the country. Avolio, Uganda's leading avocado oil processor, has the capacity to purchase and process 160,000 kilos of avocado fruits daily. This development has generated a demand for 22 million kilos of avocados annually, benefiting numerous farmers nationwide.

Hassan Al-Kailani, Avolio's managing partner, and Khadija Nakakande, the NAADS spokesperson, highlighted the economic potential of the local and Hass avocado varieties, projecting an annual contribution of about 4 million dollars to the Ugandan economy. Al-Kailani mentioned a seedling distribution initiative aimed at supporting underprivileged farmers, thereby fostering long-term partnerships and sustainable futures.
