The Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS) has entered into two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing MD2 pineapple cultivation in the region. The first agreement with Rompin Integrated Pineapple Industries Sdn Bhd aims to secure a stable market for MD2 pineapples, fostering a sustainable industry ecosystem. The second MoU with Una Crop Sdn Bhd ensures access to high-quality MD2 pineapple seeds and technical expertise, aiming for successful cultivation both in quantity and quality.
As part of the People's Income Initiative, LIGS was tasked by the Ministry of Economy to spearhead the MD2 pineapple planting in Kampung Gana, Kota Marudu, covering 80.9 hectares. This initiative, according to Sabah Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, is designed to augment the income of rubber smallholders and contribute to the national economy. The collaboration between LIGS and Rompin Integrated Pineapple Industries not only signifies a partnership between the two entities, but also symbolizes intergovernmental cooperation between Sabah and Pahang.
With the first phase of the MD2 pineapple planting program expected to yield about 5,000 tonnes of pineapples by October, LIGS is planning to expand the initiative by an additional 121.4 hectares. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to explore MD2 pineapple packaging and processing, aiming to enhance the income of participants involved in the program.
