Copa Cogeca, representing EU farm organizations including the Irish Farmers' Association, emphasized the importance of the forthcoming weeks for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). This regulation seeks to address the surge in packaging waste, harmonize packaging standards across the EU, and enhance the circular economy.
A provisional agreement, which proposes a significant reduction in the use of plastic packaging and non-compostable stickers for fresh produce, is under scrutiny. Critics argue that the agreement is excessive and could lead to increased food waste, hinder product differentiation, and negatively impact traceability and food safety. Furthermore, the regulation might allow member states significant autonomy, potentially leading to a fragmented market within the EU.
Copa Cogeca advocates for an amendment to exempt single-use packaging for fresh produce from the regulation, highlighting the logistical and financial challenges of varying packaging rules across member states.
