The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) in Thailand is closely monitoring the effects of current sweltering weather conditions on agricultural and livestock production within the country. DIT Director-General, Wattanasak Sur-iam, has confirmed that despite these challenging conditions, the prices of agricultural goods have remained stable. To mitigate the impact, the DIT has initiated programs to source vegetables at affordable prices for distribution across the nation.
In Bangkok and its metropolitan areas, Thong Fah (Blue Flag) mobile units will offer 10 types of vegetables at prices 30% lower than retail costs. Furthermore, in 10 provinces experiencing volatile prices, a minimum of 1,000 kilograms of fresh vegetables will be sold daily at wholesale prices, facilitated by provincial commerce officers to ensure accessibility. The provinces targeted include Kamphaeng Phet, Sukhothai, Chachoengsao, Ang Thong, Phuket, Narathiwat, Nakhon Ratchasima, Bung Kan, Buriram, and Nakhon Phanom.
Wattanasak has acknowledged the impact of extreme heat on vegetable production, which has led to price increases in some areas. In response, the DIT will act as an intermediary between producers and markets to maintain affordability of vegetables.
