In March, Vietnam reported a significant increase in chili exports, totaling 1,523 tons valued at US$4.2 million, a 72.3% rise from February. The Chinese market was the predominant destination, absorbing nearly 88% of these exports, as stated by the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA).
Over the first quarter, Vietnam's chili exports reached 3,141 tonnes, generating US$8.1 million, marking a 17.6% increase in volume and a 52.8% rise in value year-on-year. The export price per ton also saw a 28% increase from the previous year, averaging US$2,610. The primary importers were China and Laos, which together accounted for almost 96% of the total export volume. This surge in export prices is mainly due to the high demand in markets such as China and the Republic of Korea. The previous year, Vietnam earned US$20 million from exporting 10,173 tons of chili, doubling the volume compared to 2022.
