Brazil, currently the sixth-largest avocado producer globally, has seen a significant 50% increase in cultivation area from 2016 to 2020, as reported by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This growth, from 10.9 thousand hectares to 16.4 thousand hectares, is part of a broader trend of rising avocado production aimed at satisfying both international and domestic markets. The domestic market's demand is particularly noteworthy, with consumption rates on the rise.
The southeast region, holding 83.2% of the national production, leads in avocado production within Brazil, with São Paulo and Minas Gerais being the primary contributors. Nonetheless, expansion efforts are not confined to these areas, as other states like Ceará are also seeing advancements in avocado cultivation.
According to Maria Cecilia Whately, president director of the Brazilian Avocado Association, the focus on export markets necessitates high fruit quality and certification. She emphasizes the importance of marketing and communication strategies in this sector, highlighting the non-commodity nature of avocados and the need for careful production practices to meet market demands.
