India: Plague of caterpillars destroy vegetables

Caterpillar attacks on crops, mostly vegetables, has started worrying farmers in the Gumla district. Rising food prices are expected as a result.

"I had cultivated green pea in a two-acre plot and cauliflower in half-acre plot. As the seeds started germinating caterpillars attacked the leaves. All vegetables were badly damaged owing to which I incurred substantial financial loss," said Champa Oraon, a farmer in the district.

The plague of caterpillars have destroyed spinach, cauliflower, peas, radish and other vegetables, appearing in far greater numbers than is usual.

Nirak Kumar, an agriculture scientist attached to the District Agriculture Science Centre said the population growth in always triggered at this time of year by the onset of the Winter crop season. He advised growers to treat their crops with insecticide.
