India: Banana growers to get compensation for 2012 storm

The district administration of Pollachi, has agreed to compensation payments to growers who experienced crop damage last April due to storms. It is hoped that the compensation will offset some of the loss suffered by over 400 farmers in the region when storms damaged 150ha of land.

For every hectare of loss suffered, the farmers will get Rs. 7,500 ($137 US).

Officials say that all affected growers will receive the financial support, regardless of whether or not they had insurance.

When the damage took place the plants were to be harvested imminently, so the toll was at its peak.
