S'Esplet cooperative, the most affected

Spain: Frosts cause delay in the harvest of potatoes for export

Severe frosts occurred over the past few days will delay the harvest of potatoes for export. This was announced on Monday by the president of the s'Esplet cooperative, Josep Llabrés, who pointed out that "work will have to be done to recover the smaller plants, and if it is done, they will need be harvested in May instead of April."

Although Llabrés could not give exact figures on the losses caused by low temperatures, the manager of the Mateu Export portal, Joan Mateu, stated that "around 6% of the damaged crops concentrate in just three plantations."

However, in the area of the plantations that supply the s'Esplet cooperative, temperatures have been notably low, reaching 4 degrees Celsius below zero. This has especially damaged the most developed plants, which were to be harvested during the second half of March.

Now the s'Esplet cooperative can only hope for the plants of the late April harvest to recover. "If it doesn't rain and the weather improves, part of the harvest will likely be saved," according to Llabrés.

The extent of the damage on s'Esplet's plantations is currently being assessed by experts.
