Citrus crops in Honduras have increased despite the disease that is attacking the plantations, said a producer.
"Overall, crops are increasing despite the Huanglongbing (HLB), which may have reduced some areas," he said.
"This tells us that we must get ready to change the crops for new varieties," he said. In this regard, he stated, Honduran producers are requesting a rapprochement with Taiwan, as they have other species.
To counter the disease, the source said, producers were planning on creating a nursery with the Honduran Foundation for Agricultural Investment.
According to the producer, Honduras still has a long way to go and might be producing 15,000 tons of citrus per hectare.
According to experts, the Huanglongbing bacteria is transmitted by an insect and can only be corrected by removing the affected plants. In July 2013, 30% of the plantations in the country were contaminated.
