With the aim of increasing production levels and marketing of Creole avocado from the coast, the first Association of producers of this fruit in Costa Rica was founded with support from the Inter-American Institute for cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
The new Association of Avocado and Tropical Fruits Producers of Costa Rica consists of 20 farmers from the cantons of San Mateo and Orotina, in Alajuela, and Esparza, in Puntarenas.
The creation of this alliance took place within the framework of the Regional Program of Investigation and Innovation of Agricultural Value Chains (PRIICA), implemented by IICA. Its goal is to contribute to the technological and social development of the families in these areas.
More producers are expected to join the association in the coming months, so that they can cooperate and participate in the development of initiatives.
Benefits
In more than one year of work under the figure of the Local Consortium for Research and Agricultural Technological Innovation (CLIITA), producers collaborated with the processes of research in genetic quality of inshore avocado trees, developed by the National Institute for innovation and Transfer of Agricultural Technology (INTA).
A nursery with 1,000 trees of this fruit, which will be grafted with more productive varieties and demanded by consumers, was also established.
The initiative had the support of the Agencies for Agricultural Services of the Central Pacific Regional, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG).
The PRIICA is a program funded by the European Union that aims to enhance the food and nutritional security of producers, through the formation of partnerships between the public and private sector, management of knowledge, research, and innovation in cassava, potato, tomato and avocado in Central America and Panama.
