The president of the National Bureau of garlic, Julio Bacete, has done the balance for 2011 in this sector. According to Bacete, the crisis has also taken its toll and garlic consumption has decreased compared with the previous two seasons. It has also been a year of uncertainty because the garlic produced in Spain again depends on what happens in China. However, Bacete is optimistic for the future.
The sector is currently immersed in the planting phase. This year a slight increase is expected in the acreage but we will have to wait for the final data. This increase will mainly affect the early garlic to the detriment of the purple one, which will stay the same or decline slightly.
