Finland turns to bio-energy to combat soaring oil costs

The soaring cost of oil is leading growers in Finland to turn to alternatives for heating their glasshouses, including domestically produced bio-energy. Another piece of good news for the environment is the trend of using electricity saving LED lights. Bio-energy now accounts for around 40% of energy used to heat glasshouses in the country. At the turn of the century the figure was closer to 30%.

This has successfully led to reduced heating costs, however, these reductions have not been passed on to the consumer at this stage and the prices of domestically produced tomatoes and cucumbers remain high.

A variety of fuels are being utilised, but primarily these involve peat and wood chip.
