US (FL): Tomaotoes receive flavour boost

Tomatoes, like roses, have lost scent and taste as growers have strived, over the years, to produce varieties that have good yield capability, disease resistance and long shelf life. This could be about to change thanks to researchers at the University of Florida. A team of researchers are looking into the possibility of putting increased flavour back into tomatoes and also looking at the impact modern growing techniques have had on blueberries, strawberries and roses.

They are focusing efforts on heirloom varieties as they go back, in some cases, many hundreds of years to times before modern techniques were introduced. They face challenges however, as many growers are suspicious of the varieties due to poor disease resistance.

Consumers have not been known to demand high flavour tomatoes as the price of them has traditionally been too high to be considered viable.
