Israel: Orly to spread popularity of cactus

Orly Cactus Farms, an Israeli grower of fresh cactus and cactus fruit, will introduce their product for domestic consumption. Although the product has been consumed in other countries for many years, this is the first time Israelis will encounter it, and Orly hopes it will catch on.

Most people associate the cactus with a barren desert, but it's been eaten for many years in different countries around the world, according to Shahar Bloom of Orly Cactus Farms.

"In Mexico, it's been very well known for many years," he said. "But in Israel, it's not so well known." This being the first time people are introduced to it domestically, Shahar Bloom thinks they have to educate people about what it is and how it can be eaten.

"You can take the leaves of the cactus and put it in everything you cook," he said. "The taste is unique, and everyone who tastes it says it's unique. You can also pickle it."

Shahar Bloom said the product will reach the market in May and will enjoy a lengthy season that runs to November. The leaves can also be packaged and frozen to ensure near year-round availability. The domestic Israeli market will be targeted first, but Shahar Bloom said they hope to export to Russia and Europe through Agrexco.
