Asparagus grower Walter Gubbels:

Asparagus supply considerably smaller

The weather conditions are far too cold to sell asparagus. According to asparagus grower Walter Gubbels from Helvoirt, The Netherlands, who is connected to The Greenery.

"Up to and including last week-end we had not as yet reached half of last year's production. The kilograms of last year will definitely not be reached this season. Prices are reasonable at a level of euro 4.50 for double-A asparagus, but compared to the production this is actually too low.

Walter does not expect the production to be very large. "I am not saying that there will not be a peak at all, but supply will be a lot more spread out. The asparagus from the young fields will drop out this and next week. All in all I am optimistic about the later part of the season. I hope the weather will improve, because that will certainly stimulate the demand. In any case there will be nice 'asparagus week-ends' with Mothers Day, Ascension Day and Pentecost."
