NZ: Antibiotic kiwifruit destroyed

The Ministry of Primary Industries has now confirmed that no kiwifruit contaminated by antibiotic has made it into the food chain.

The ministry, along with Zespri, tested all orchards after 60 growers reported they had misused streptomycin, either by spaying outside the allowed time, or injecting it into the vines.

test results show that no residues have been found outside the orchards already declared and the fruit from these has been destroyed.

The ministry says it is continuing to investigate the growers who misused streptomycin.
