Enza Zaden discuss shelf posibilities during the House Fair
This week the annual Enza Zaden House Fair is being organised in De Lier. Growers, traders and retailers from abroad and locally have the opportunity to view and to discuss well-known and new cucumbers. peppers and aubergine varieties. Also the organic assortment of subsidiary Vitalis may be viewed. The House Fair is open till Friday from 9 am to 6 pm and may be visited as agreed.
Enza Zaden spend a lot of time at the House Fair on British. German and Dutch supermarket shelves. "Three times a year we prepare an extensive analysis of these and we enjoy showing our visitors what developments we have noticed and how our clients should deal with them. We view the supermarket shelf as more of a possibility for discussion than as a presentation box," Marketing Manager Chris de Groot explains.
Cultivation specialist Wim Buijks explains a few new and promising varieties:
Artega:
Artega is a new red pepper and is regarded as the successor to Cupra. It is also possible to grow the Artega in tandem with Maranello as a somewhat nicer block pepper for the British market. Another strong aspect of the Artega is the durability.
Volante
The yellow block pepper Volante has a good production, but the great advantage is that the pepper does not have any anthocyanin. Therefore at the very last moment last year various growers changed to this variety. "Buyers occasionally make this a condition. Therefore early contact between seed and trading company is of the utmost importance," Wim says.
Avalantino
The Avalantiono is offered as a loose tomato and as a tomato on the vine. Originally this tomato came from the cocktail segment. Loose the tomato is sold as a taste tomato. The average weight of the fruit is 58/59 grams. On the vine the Avalantiono is limited to six and the weight of the fruit is 80-85 grams.
Diamantino
The Diamantino was baptised last summer. The variety is doing well in the middle segment of the vine, also when under lights. The green parts remain nice. Also it is a strong variety, stronger than the existing ones. Also the tolerance against mildew is a strong point.
Kanavaro
The Kanavaro is mainly grown in Belgium, Poland and France. The variety is very firm with a beautiful shine. At the moment tests are being run with the variety at cutting companies, as, when cut, hardly any juice escapes from the tomato.
Annatefka
Annatefka is a cocktail tomato, which at the moment runs with the tests at growers association Prominent. The variety is strong against tearing. The weight of the fruit is a little lower and anticipates the British demand. The variety has a flat bunch, nice green parts and as far as production is concerned may be compared to Brioso.
Bartok
Last year again Enza Zaden was a player with Bartok on the aubergine market. The variety is a little darker of colour than other varieties, is a little smaller with a fruit weight of 200/300 grams and has a nice fruit.
Kurios
The cucumber variety Kurios was introduced by Enza Zaden for the second planting. The variety has a uniform fruit length, a good production
and a good balance. Last year the variety became commercially available and this year there will be a further expansion.
