Effects of citrus shortages are being felt by Israeli exporter

“The citrus market will remain strong throughout February”

Although production for Israeli citrus is lower than a couple of years ago, the exporters are having a good time at the moment, says Planet Israel export manager Betsalel Ohana: “At this point we’re feeling the effects of the citrus shortage. Demand is very strong at the moment, in fact demand is so high that we’re unable to supply all the requested quantities. This probably has to do with the fact the shortage of citrus is a global phenomenon. Several producing countries are dealing with various challenges, such as storms and droughts. As one can expect during a shortage, prices of citrus fruits have increased, by about twenty to thirty cents per kilogram.”

Due to these shortages, Ohana expects demand to remain at a high level for at least a couple of months. “For us at Plane Israel, we currently export a lot of our volumes to North America and Canada. For European markets, we’re mainly focused on France and the Netherland. With the global shortages in mind, we do anticipate that the market will remain strong throughout February as well. And even during a normal season, the markets are always strong. So, we expect to have a very good time the upcoming weeks, as demand will probably not go down,” he concludes.
