Excessive heat dashing hopes for bumper mango harvest in Bangladesh

In Rajshahi, Bangladesh, known for its excellent mango varieties, orchards have experienced a significant loss, with at least 20% of fruits dropping during the setting stage due to excessive heat. This has raised concerns among farmers regarding the forthcoming harvest.

The Rajshahi Fruit Research Station has observed that the continuation of the heatwave could lead to further fruit drop. They recommend increased irrigation to support the trees during this period. With the district experiencing severe temperatures, reaching a peak of 41.5 degrees Celsius recently, the heatwave has affected 51 out of 64 districts in Bangladesh.

The local administration has initiated a seven-day heat alert. Mango growers in the region have reported adverse effects on the fruit, including premature yellowing and falling. The necessity for rainfall is emphasized, but the prevailing heatwave conditions are unfavorable for mango cultivation, potentially leading to reduced production and increased prices. The Rajshahi Fruit Research Station advises on irrigation practices to mitigate the impact on mangoes at the set phase. Mango cultivation this season spans 93,266 hectares across Rajshahi and neighboring districts, with a production goal of 1.2 million tons, matching last year's output.
