As Ecuador faces domestic economic challenges, it celebrates significant achievements in the export sector, such as the entry of red pitahaya into new international markets. Pro Ecuador has announced that two Ecuadorian companies have successfully made their first exports of red pitahaya to the United States and Germany, marking an important milestone for the country's fruit industry.
The Zamuagro company exported this product to Germany after participating in the Fruit Logistica Berlin Fair. Beautifruit Export sent red pitahaya to the US market through a virtual personalized agenda. These success stories reflect the potential and quality of Ecuadorian fruit on the global stage.
Ecuador currently exports its pitahaya, a product known for its exotic flavor and nutritional properties, to 56 countries. The country has 6,000 hectares devoted to growing this fruit and the sector employs 4,128 people. Ecuador mainly grows two pitahaya varieties: yellow pitahaya, which accounts for 90% of the production, and red pitahaya, which accounts for the remaining 10%.
Pitahaya is produced in Morona Santiago, Pichincha, Imbabura, Bolívar, Loja, Santo Domingo, Manabí, Los Ríos, Santa Elena, Guayas, and El Oro, which demonstrates the wide geographical distribution of the crop in the country.
