Berry fruit production and water challenges in Mangualde

In Mangualde, in central Portugal, berry fruit producers have expressed relief over this year's abundant rainfall. However, concerns persist regarding long-term water security. The absence of progress on the Girabolhos dam, a project long-promised to the community, has been a particular point of contention.

Mayor Marco Almeida emphasized the critical nature of the dam, stating: "The Girabolhos dam could definitively resolve this problem, and the truth is that we are always talking about it, hoping for it, but nothing ever gets done. It is important that we start looking at this region, and advancing definitively with the solution that we have 'in our hands'".

The region, known for its water-intensive agricultural practices including greenhouse explorations, underscores the urgency for sustainable water management solutions.
