In the first quarter of 2024, Peru exported a record 8,453 tons of ginger for more than $22.6 million in revenues. This increase is due to the growing global demand for healthy and functional foods, according to Sierra y Selva Exportadora.
The US, the Netherlands, Canada, and Germany were the main destination markets, concentrating 92% of shipments between January and March 2024. It's worth highlighting that the value of exports to the United States and Germany increased by 49% and 14%, respectively, over the same period of the previous year.
In 2023, Peru exported 73,196 tons of ginger worth $119.1 million, consolidating itself as one of the world's main ginger exporters. These results reflect sustained growth over the last five years, with a 26% increase in volume and 24% in value.
China and India are the world's leading exporters of ginger. However, Peruvian ginger has a superior quality, aroma, flavor, and color than Chinese and Indian ginger. In addition, it is constantly available, giving it a competitive advantage over periods of Chinese and Indian low production. The region of Junín accounts for 90% of the country's ginger production. The crop is mainly grown in the Pichanaqui, Satipo, San Martín de Pangoa, and Mazamari districts.
The Peruvian organic ginger segment accounts for more than 60% of total exports, highlighting the importance and prestige of this product in the international market.
Sierra and Selva Exportadora is promoting two Commercial Articulation Plans to support the Huayna Picchu VAE Association of Agroindustrial Producers and Multiple Services (APASEM) and the LAND Peru Agricultural Cooperative, both from the region of Junín. In 2023, these organizations marketed their product for a total of 678,682 Soles, with Organic and Global GAP certifications that guarantee the quality and sustainability of their products.
