Most of Janyra Organics' herbs of the new season are ready to harvest. This cultivation and export company from Kitui, Kenya, recently primarily focused on the domestic market, but this season, its gaze is increasingly turning towards the export market. "We started two years ago. This first full-fledged harvest should allow us to be competitive in the Dutch market," begins Ton Verheijke, responsible for Janyra Organics' exports.
Ton's Kenyan wife founded the company in 2020. In addition to herbs, they cultivate avocados, with which they are already exploring the Dutch market. "The Kenyan climate is particularly well-suited for growing herbs. You do need to invest in good systems to protect yourself against possible weather extremes, but many countries face those these days. We've invested in basins, drainage systems, and wells. In Kenya, prolonged droughts and abundant rainfall frequently alternate. These investments mean we can optimize our water supply."
"Nonetheless, this season's herbs look qualitatively excellent. We started with basil, but over time, we've expanded to a dozen different types, like mint, rosemary, oregano, tarragon, and lemongrass," says Ton.
"Sage, rosemary, thyme, and lemongrass are now ready for harvest, and the chives will be ready in about three weeks. Thus, we can create a nice overlap of products throughout the year alongside the avocados," says Ton.
The company wants to focus more on exports. "With avocados, we're looking at opportunities with importers. That search continues. But I think we can stand out with the herbs. The hospitality sector increasingly requests these because chefs want to add an extra dimension to their dishes."
"With high-quality herbs, that's certainly possible," the trader explains. He also expects to deliver consistent volumes. "For the first time, we've managed to harvest nice volumes. Plus, we work with several regional growers who supply us. They're carefully selected and must have the right certificates before we start working with them."
For Janyra Organics, finding a partner in this venture is now important. "We often find it hard to break into the market. We have a wonderful product, but finding the right partner isn't always easy. You must be inventive in bringing importers in contact with your product. The wide variety of herbs we offer should make a partner happy," Ton concludes.
