High production costs, due to stringent natural farming requirements and labor, result in organic vegetables being priced 2-3 times higher than conventional ones. This has limited their market to high-income consumers, slowing consumption.
Entrepreneurs like Tran Thi Lan Anh and Hoang Hai Hau highlight the financial burdens of organic farming, from the investment in infrastructure to the high operational costs, making profitability elusive. The economic downturn has further weakened the organic product market, exacerbating issues of preservation and sales. Consequently, many have exited the industry after short periods, while others, like Tran Phuoc Linh, find success by targeting niche markets or focusing on specific consumer needs.
Despite these hurdles, some organic farmers achieve success by adapting strategies or aligning with larger corporate farms, suggesting a mixed outlook for Vietnam's organic agriculture sector.
