Valenciaport sees growth in cargo and container handling

March's data from the Valenciaport Statistical Bulletin reveals that the port managed nearly 7 million tonnes of cargo, a 3.84% increase. Container handling reached 459,749 TEUs, up by 15.86%. The year-to-date figures indicate a handling of 19.2 million tonnes of cargo, marking a 5.41% growth, and container traffic at 1,243,844 TEUs, a 12.07% increase. The Port of València also reported 83,902 visitors in March, including 56,970 passengers on regular lines to the Balearic Islands and 26,932 cruise passengers.

Ro-ro traffic and Intermodal Transport Units (ITUs) saw increases of 2.09% and 7.54%, respectively. The Port Authority of València (PAV) highlighted the growing importance of emerging nations in its traffic data, with significant trade volumes with countries like Ukraine, Turkey, Algeria, and Saudi Arabia. Despite the conflict, Ukraine's trade surged by 107.9%, with a total import volume of 354,265 tons, a 116.68% increase from the previous year. Transit goods grew by 20.16%, while exports remained stable.

Trade with the Far East also increased, with 207,838 TEUs handled in the first quarter, a 23.38% rise. While China remains the primary trading partner with 157,025 containers, significant increases were observed with Greece, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, mainly due to transshipment traffic. Algeria and Turkey also experienced growth in their traffic volumes by 29.01% and 21.75%, respectively, with notable export increases to Morocco and France.
