The extra-early stone fruit season has already begun in the Region of Murcia, where producers in the Vega Alta have started harvesting the first varieties of peaches, nectarines, and apricots. Producers expect a harvest of approximately 300,000 tons and optimal quality fruit due to the absence of significant temperature fluctuations. Miguel Ángel Piñera, president of COAG in Cieza, confirmed these positive prospects for production.
According to COAG, the market's reception of the season's first fruits has been good. Estimates are 60,000 to 75,000 tons of extra-early fruit will be placed on the market. The early varieties will be harvested until May 20. The mid-season campaign will start on that date and last until the end of July, followed by the late production in August. Asaja producers from the Valle de Ricote have reported that some farms have already completed the harvest.
In 2023, the Region of Murcia exported 132,000 tons of stone fruit. This figure reflects the region's importance in the international market, positioning itself as one of Spain's main exporting provinces of peaches and nectarines, and the country's leading exporter of apricots.
