In the 2023-2024 campaign, the price of Peruvian table grapes varied depending on the country of destination and the variety exported. According to Adam Formica, scientific director of Sensonomic, the Timpson and Sweet Globe have achieved the highest prices among the six main new AUTUMNCRISP ® varieties. Hong Kong has positioned itself as the market that pays the best prices, followed by the United States, Mexico, and the Netherlands.
Formica highlighted that in Hong Kong, AUTUMNCRISP® and Sweet Celebration were sold at almost US$0.50 and US$0.30 more per kilo, respectively, than the Sweet Globe and Ivory varieties. In other markets, prices were relatively similar for all varieties, except the Allison and Ivory grapes, which were sold at lower prices in Mexico.
The analysis suggests that Hong Kong may have offered higher prices due to longer travel times from Lima, as they can reach 36 days. Interestingly, the United States paid more than the Netherlands for Peruvian grapes, even though the travel time is shorter to the US (18 days to Philadelphia vs 25 days to Rotterdam). The recent congestion in the Panama Canal might have had an impact on exports to the US East Coast and Europe, but the price difference between these destinations could be due to the Netherlands having closer access to seasonal grapes from South Africa and India.
