More than half of the Philippines’ provinces are in drought

The Philippines is experiencing the effects of the El NiƱo weather phenomenon, characterized by drier conditions and elevated temperatures. This climate pattern, known for causing global heat increases, has led to drought in various regions, including over half of the provinces in the Philippines, such as Nueva Ecija.

The country, already facing challenges from climate change, is witnessing temperatures soaring to around 40 degrees Celsius, with the heat index in some areas reaching 53 degrees Celsius. The United Nations has indicated that the upcoming harvest in the Philippines is expected to be "below average" due to these conditions. Crop losses have already surpassed PHP4 billion, and the situation for farmers could worsen without imminent rain. Although rainfall is anticipated in mid-May, the state weather forecaster's chief climatologist, Ana Solis, suggests that drier than normal conditions may continue until August.
