This year, lemon farmers in the Hawaiibari area of Teliamura town, Khowai district, Tripura, are facing significant losses. The absence of monsoon rains during the summer has adversely affected both crop production and livelihoods. Lemons from this region are recognized both within and outside the state. However, this year's harvest has been negatively impacted due to the lack of rainfall.
Interactions with a local farmer in Hawaiibari revealed a reduction in crop cultivation compared to previous years. The farmer highlighted that Teliamura Hawaiian lemons have a strong market reputation. Despite the historical reliance on lemon cultivation for livelihood, this year's rain scarcity has resulted in poor yields. Typically, adequate rainfall ensures profitable lemon sales, but the current year has seen a decline in lemon size and price, with wholesalers buying at significantly lower rates. Consequently, farmers are facing reduced profits.
Despite their significant contribution, Hawaiibari's lemon farmers have not received government assistance. They are advocating for support in the form of fertilizers, pesticides, and other cultivation resources to improve production and secure their families' futures.
