The Brazilian Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruit and Derivatives (Abrafrutas) has expressed solidarity with the people of Rio Grande do Sul following significant flooding, highlighting concerns over the impact on the region's agricultural sectors. Apple production, a key agricultural activity in Rio Grande do Sul, faces challenges due to the state's climatic conditions and fertile soils, particularly in the Vacaria region, which is a major contributor to Brazil's apple output.
Despite the adverse weather conditions causing some losses due to soil moisture, approximately 97% of the national apple harvest has been completed. The Brazilian Association of Apple Producers (ABPM) notes that the floods have led to logistical issues, disrupting the distribution of produce both locally and to other states. The primary challenge remains the damage to road infrastructure, crucial for the transportation of goods, especially in the Vacaria region.
Rafael Oliveira, a representative from Castelo Representações Comerciais, indicated that other seasonal fruits like citrus and persimmons, currently being harvested, might also suffer from the flooding's effects.
