A recent market survey by the Ghana News Agency in the Cape Coast Metropolis has revealed a significant increase in the prices of vegetables. The cost of a box of tomatoes has escalated from GHC1,500 to GHC3,500 within a month. Similarly, a small paint container of tomatoes has risen from GHC35.00 to GHC55.00.
The price for a mini bag of onion and a tin tomato container has also surged to GHC1,450.00 and GHC60.00, respectively. A one kg of garlic now costs GHC40.00, and a basket of cucumber ranges from GHC400.00 to GHC500.00. The increase in prices is attributed to unstable weather conditions and the high cost of transportation.
This situation has affected sales, with a preference shift towards tin tomatoes over fresh ones. Additionally, the price for a bag of maize and a mini bag of millet has increased to GHC800 and GHC700, respectively. Traders anticipate further price hikes in cereals and legumes due to transportation costs.
