South Korea's Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency announced the implementation of stricter measures for tomato exports to Japan. This move comes in the wake of tomato leafminer infections detected at local farms in March. To ensure the exports remain unaffected, tomato producers aiming for the Japanese market are now required to conduct investigations using traps two months before harvesting.
These investigations aim to confirm the absence of tomato leafminer infections. This regulation, set to be enforced in January, is a result of discussions between South Korean and Japanese officials. Annually, South Korea exports approximately 3,400 tons of tomatoes to Japan, which represents about 1.2 percent of its total tomato production.
