Morocco launches blueberry season with 80,000-ton harvest targeting global markets

Morocco is on the brink of initiating a new blueberry production season, with the first harvests of early varieties set to commence at the beginning of December. This marks the beginning of a campaign that is anticipated to reach its zenith in the subsequent months. Despite the peak production period spanning from January to March, the months of April to June are expected to showcase optimal availability, catering to the escalating demand on international markets. The harvest is projected to hit 80,000 tons, a figure that underscores the particularly favorable conditions of the season.

As per Agrimaroc, Juan Sainz of the Frutta Group, which maintains a close collaboration with producers globally, highlighted the season's favorable climatic and agronomic conditions. These conditions are anticipated to yield high-quality production, enhancing Morocco's stature in the global blueberry market. "Moroccan blueberries are known for their high quality, but demand for high-value fruits is growing," Sainz remarked. The synergy of an exceptional product and advantageous logistical conditions positions Morocco as a frontrunner in blueberry production, appealing to importers globally, with a notable demand emerging from Europe and the Middle East.

Moreover, the Asian and North American markets are also engaging, reflecting the sector's international reach. Morocco's ascendancy in the blueberry industry transcends quality; it has carved a niche by introducing specific varieties that resonate with the international market's demands. This approach ensures a more consistent and sustainable production, guaranteeing traceability and food safety that align with the highest standards. Predominantly cultivated in the Souss and Oriental regions, Moroccan blueberries thrive in an ideal climate and fertile soils, contributing to their sweetness and firmness.

Nevertheless, Morocco encounters growing competition from both emerging and established producers. With global production volumes on the rise, Moroccan producers are compelled to innovate continuously to stay competitive. Their focus on innovative varieties and unparalleled quality seems to be fruitful, as Moroccan blueberries garner increasing demand in international markets, including North America, which faced supply challenges last year. "Last year, we had difficulties supplying our customers in North America, due to pressure from other markets. This year, we have concentrated our efforts on better-distributing business opportunities and avoiding these bottlenecks," Sainz elucidated.
