SN Report: Retailers optimistic about center store sales in 2021
Nearly half (45%) of retailers say that the coronavirus pandemic led to increased sales of more than 10% in center store, with 18% seeing increased sales of 5% to 9.9% and 19% with increased sales of 0 to 4.9%. The news is even better for center store dollar sales in 2021, as 80% of retailers expect sales to remain the same or increase this year. A full 20% of retailers anticipate dollar sales increases of more than 10%, while 24% expect increases of 5% to 10% and another 21% expect increases of 2% to 4.9%. Those are among the findings of this year’s Supermarket News Center Store Trends Report, based on responses from 110 food retailers and wholesalers, surveyed throughout August 2021.

Costco the grocer of choice for Canadian newcomers: study
Newcomers to Canada are likely to choose Costco as their grocery store of choice, with its prices, product quality - and of course its beloved sampling program - all playing a role in their decision. The findings are part of the ongoing Newcomers to Canada study by Toronto’s Solutions Research Group. They are based on a survey of 850 new Canadians who arrived in Canada after 2015, as well as 600 interviews with respondents from the general population. Newcomer respondents also identified Walmart, Real Canadian Superstore, FreshCo and No Frills as their preferred destination for groceries.

Pattison Food Group acquires U.S. chain Roth's Fresh Markets
The Pattison Food Group is expanding outside Canada with the acquisition of Oregon-based Roth’s Fresh Markets. A Pattison release announcing the deal said the 9-store chain would maintain its name and operating structure while “leveraging synergies and other opportunities for business growth provided by the Pattison Food Group”. The deal is scheduled to take effect October 26, pending regulatory approval.

Brazil: GPA sells 71 Extra Hiper stores to Assai for $943 mln
Brazilian retailer GPA said that it had agreed on an up to 5.2bln reais ($943mln) deal with wholesaler Assai for it to buy 71 of its Extra Hiper cash and carry stores. GPA said Assai had agreed to pay 4bln reais between December 2021 and January 2024. Additionally, GPA said it had agreed to sell 17 of its properties to a real estate investment fund backed by Assai for 1.2bln reais.
