When tensile structures make the difference

Cherries already being harvested in Puglia

A cherry producer from Puglia registered a delay of only three days despite this year's unfavorable weather.

"After harvesting a polytunnel of an ancient local variety called Palombara, I started harvesting the early variety Early Bigi on April 23rd, 2023. Operations will last around 10 days. Grades measure between 30 and 32 mm, plus the flavor is excellent and texture is good. We will give our whole production to OP Agritalia. I would not have managed such a result had I not believed in Retilplast cover solutions."

That is what reported by Antonio Guglielmi (in the photo above) from Bisceglie, owner of Naturaviva and member of Agromnia, an agronomic consulting company made up of a pool of professionals.

"The weather has been terrible so far: winter was warm with a few frosty spells. Now it rains for days, so the humidity rate is going through the roof. However, my cherry orchards are fully covered, so they are safe against thermal shocks and other unpleasant dynamics. It is a 3.20 m tall tensile structure with a central ventilation corridor and side openings. Everything is covered with a Plus thermoplastic film and an anti-insect net. When the temperature rises, the greenhouse reaches 30°C max and, when it's cold, it can be as much as 4°C warmer than outside."

The ventilation corridor can open up to a meter, so growers can manage temperature and humidity thanks to better air circulation. This means cherries ripen earlier thanks to the diffused light and excellent film transparency, which in turn means the year starts when prices are satisfactory.

The type of cover installed in Guglielmi's cherry orchard was agreed and shared with Retilplast, a company from Campania that produces, transforms and commercializes films and reinforced tarpaulins, as part of a research project financed by the Puglia PSR (Misura 16.2 - E.Shelter).
