Grupo Alcoaxarquía kicks off its Lamb Hass avocado campaign in the Region of Valencia

"Now is when Lamb Hass avocados have the optimal quality for consumption"

The marketing of Lamb Hass avocados, grown in the Region of Valencia, has just started for Grupo Alcoaxarquia, which is carrying out this out through its new subsidiary Alcoaxarquia Levante, in the Valencian municipality of Sollana. They argue that now is when the avocados are at their most optimal condition to be harvested and when the product offers the best quality for consumption.

"Until now, and in general, the Lamb Hass, which in Spain is mostly cultivated in the Region of Valencia, has not been treated as a variety distinct from the Hass. In many cases, it has been harvested and marketed prematurely, taking advantage of the rise in prices, selling it also as Hass. It has often been sold to the customer as Hass, although the grower has been paid the price of the Lamb Hass," says Juan Becerra, managing director of Grupo Alcoaxarquía.

"Due to that premature harvesting, the Lamb Hass has not enjoyed the best reputation in terms of quality and yield in the retail. However, we have found that it is an exquisite variety, able to satisfy the most demanding avocado consumers when harvested optimally ripe and with a good balance between dry matter and fat levels. This shows that the Region of Valencia is as suitable, due to its climate, for avocado production as other Spanish producing areas," said Juan Becerra.

"Although market prices are not as attractive as in February, it is now when the Valencian Lamb Hass has the right quality and when we prefer to start selling it, adhering to our philosophy of prioritizing quality. We do not conceive any other way of marketing this product than professionally and thinking about the crop's future. We trust the value of the product will increase if things are done right," said the company's managing director.

Alcoaxarquia Levante signed a collaboration agreement with AVA-ASAJA, ASOPROA and IVIA, lending its know-how in a project to improve the management of avocado production and ripening in the Region of Valencia in order to achieve greater homogeneity and higher yields. "By improving the yields and quality, we can make up for the price gap that producers have to deal with when harvesting at the right time, and help boost the product's popularity and turn it into a real alternative to citrus," said Juan Becerra.
