A deep dive into the world of specialty lettuces

Colombia's rich agricultural landscape

Royal Fruit and Vegetables SAS has been cultivating and selling agroindustrial products in the Colombian market for over 20 years. The company is primarily focused on the cultivation and distribution of gourmet vegetables, including varieties of lettuce such as Green Leaf, Butterhead, Iceberg, Romaine, Purple Leaf, and Escarole. Royal's lettuce products are popular among hotels and restaurants, as well as national supermarkets, "We have been serving Crepes and Waffles on a national level for 18 years, upholding quality service and timely delivery."

According to Julio Mario Narvaez, Royal's Export Manager, the company's flagship product is its range of gourmet lettuce. Narvaez also mentioned that the company has lettuce products such as Baby Purple Romaine lettuce, Baby Green Romaine lettuce, and Kale Imperial Arugula. The company also offers Asiatic mixed lettuce consisting of Mizuna, Red mustard greens, and Tatsoi.

While Royal has exported its products in the past, the company currently focuses mainly on the Colombian market. "We have exported in the past, but we have shifted our focus to the national market. Our products meet the demands of chefs in hotels and restaurants," Narvaez states. They supply national hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets. Narvaez mentioned that the demand for their products has increased since the pandemic, as people have become more conscious of their health and are opting for a plant-based diet with fresh, quality produce. "Nowadays people are more aware and encouraged to opt for a healthier, plant-based diet.”

When asked about changes in prices, Narvaez noted that the cost of raw materials has increased due to various factors, such as the conflict in Ukraine, where many fertilizers are produced. "The cost of the fertilizers increased by several factors, but we managed to maintain our prices drastically," Narvaez said.

The company also uses biodegradable packaging to minimize its environmental impact. Narvaez acknowledges that the irregular climate patterns have had an impact on their farming. "It has been quite irregular compared to traditional patterns, but that's just the life of a farmer." In addition to their main farm in Sabana de Bogotá, Royal works with allied growers located in different parts of Colombia.
