Mexico’s avocado production and exports continue to grow. Its European market share has also grown over the last years. The Netherlands is Europe’s largest importer and exporter of avocados. But what is the environmental impact of this growing avocado trade between Mexico and Europe?
This was the main question of a study commissioned by the Netherlands Embassy in Mexico and which focused on Jalisco, Mexico’s second most important avocado producing state and the state which produces the majority of the Mexican avocados exported to Europe. The study is now complete and its main findings will be presented in an on-line session on 9 May from 16:00 to 18:00 (CET) / 8:00 to 10:00 (Mexico-City/Guadalajara).
During the session, several sustainability-related initiatives currently underway in Jalisco will be presented by Jalisco’s Ministry of Environment and Territorial Development, Jalisco’s association of avocado growers and exporters APEAJAL as well as International NGO Rainforest Alliance.
All Dutch avocado importers and other stakeholders interested in contributing to a more sustainable avocado value chain from Mexico to Europe are welcome to join this session and participate in the discussion.
