November was a "relatively balanced" month for the avocado market, according to François Bellivier, head of development at Capexo. "Apart from last week, which is always the worst of the year in terms of consumption, prices have been very good on the French market. Although not as exceptional as we had expected, they were in line with consumption levels that are also more in line with the norm for the current period, and better than last year. In week 47, for example, avocados were sold at €13-14 [13.7-14.8 USD] per parcel, compared with around €11-12 [11.6-12.7 USD] in the same week last year."
In terms of origins, the market currently features Chile, Colombia, Israel, Morocco and Spain, which is just starting its campaign. European production intensifies over the winter period. "This year will be marked by a major shift in origins. Production in Morocco, Israel and Spain is rising steadily. We have reached 100,000 tons of Moroccan avocados this year (+55% from last year). We should have a reasonable winter in terms of supply from European production, with no need to import avocados from Mexico or other further origins. This is all the more interesting given that European origins, thanks in particular to much shorter transport times, benefit from better quality. "By increasing our volumes of avocados produced around the Mediterranean, we are gaining in quality, which could boost consumption over the winter period."
Regarding consumption, however, François has his doubts. "I am not confident about the demand in 2025. The economic situation in Europe in general is not good. France is in a political fog, and certain events such as the closure of major companies are not exactly sending out reassuring signals. I am afraid that this will have an impact on the consumption of products that have a certain price per unit, such as avocados. But perhaps the fact that there is a lot of production will enable us to boost consumption and make consumer prices more attractive."
