Indian tomato farmers face crisis as prices plummet to $0.012-$0.025 per kilogram

In a sudden turn of events, tomato prices in India have drastically dropped from INR 30-40 per kilogram ($0.37-$0.49) to INR 1-2 per kg ($0.012-$0.025), causing distress among farmers. The sharp decline prompted farmers to express their frustration by discarding their produce on the roads rather than selling at such low rates. Pathikonda agriculture market, recognized as the state's largest tomato market, witnessed an influx of farmers from nearby districts aiming for a profitable return.

Initially, the season seemed promising with tomatoes fetching a good price. However, the scenario changed abruptly on Tuesday when the price fell to $0.012-$0.025 p/kg, leaving farmers in shock. This price drop has made it impossible for farmers to cover even their transportation and labor costs. Reports suggest that the lack of demand in the Hyderabad market is a key factor behind the plummeting prices at Pathikonda. Despite the low wholesale price, tomatoes are still being sold at around INR 40 per kilogram ($0.49) in retail outlets. Farmers have called on the government to intervene and establish a minimum selling price to at least cover their expenses.
