The 2024-25 blueberry export season from Peru has unfolded at a slower pace compared to previous years, yet it has seen a higher export volume. As of the current date, the country has exported 254,406 tons of blueberries, with 89% being conventional and 11% organic. This represents a 61% increase in volume compared to the same period last season.
Exports of organic blueberries have nearly reached 30 thousand tons, with expectations to close the season at around 40 thousand tons. A notable shift in the market distribution has been observed, with 89% of exports now directed to the USA, a decrease from the near 100% in past seasons, and 10% making its way to the European market.
The peak export week for the 2024-25 season was recorded in week 42, with 22,348 tons shipped, contrasting with the peak weeks of previous campaigns. The USA remains the primary destination for Peruvian blueberries, receiving 53% of the total exports, followed by Europe, China, the United Kingdom, and other countries, making up the rest of the market share.
A significant portion of the exports, 97%, is transported by sea, with major ports of arrival including the Port of Philadelphia for the USA, the Port of Rotterdam for Europe, the Port of Shenzhen for China, the Port of Dover for the UK, and the Port of Kaohsiung for other destinations.
Leading the export regions are La Libertad, Lambayeque, Ica, Lima, and Ancash, which combined, account for 98% of the total export volume. The most exported varieties include Ventura, Biloxi, Sekoya Pop, and Rocío, with the top exporting companies being Camposol, Agrovisión, Hortifrut, Beta, and Agricola Cerro Prieto.
The 2024 campaign has 20,195 certified hectares, with 67% concentrated in the top five varieties, predominantly located in the northern department of La Libertad. The variety landscape has evolved significantly since 2016, with Ventura and Biloxi now representing 43% of the hectares, and Sekoya POP emerging with a 14% share.
Projections for the 2024-2025 campaign estimate that Peruvian fresh blueberry shipments could reach a total volume of 323,928 tons, marking a 4.1% increase from the previous forecast. The Peruvian blueberry campaign spans from May of the current year to April of the following year.
